School of Technology

Research across the Departments of the School underpins the solutions to societal issues that are being addressed by joining up the full range of research and policy expertise across the University, generating ideas and innovations to help shape a sustainable future.

Decarbonisation requires transformation change across all sectors which will be met by accelerating technology development. The highly disruptive potential of decarbonisation technology has business and societal implications that a world-leading interdisciplinary approach is well placed to address.

Research Highlights

Whittle Laboratory

For 50 years the Whittle Laboratory has worked with its industrial partners to make air travel and power generation more efficient, reliable and safe.

Today, air travel and power generation are faced with the reality of climate change and the Whittle Laboratory is helping them transition to a carbon neutral future.

The Whittle Laboratory team combine three core capabilities:
rapid technology development which comprises state-of-the-art computational modelling, in-house manufacture and world-leading test facilities
ability to address techno-economic questions across a wide range of disciplines
agility and flexibility to respond to the needs of both new entrants and established players

Singapore Cambridge CARES

The Cambridge Centre for Advanced Research and Education in Singapore (CARES) is the University’s first overseas research centre, supported by the Singapore government through its Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE)

Cambridge CARES hosts a number of collaborative research programmes, many to address decarbonisation and climate change mitigation, with the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University.

The Cambridge Centre for Carbon Reduction in Chemical Technology (C4T) is a joint partnership to decarbonise Singapore with a particular focus on Singapore's chemical industry.

The Centre For Sustainable Road Freight

The Centre for Sustainable Road Freight brings together multi-disciplinary teams of researchers and industry leaders to improve road freight efficiency and reduce its environmental impact.

Its purpose is to research engineering and organizational solutions to make road freight economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.
