Our Departments
There are four Departments and one Institute within the School of Technology:
Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology
We use fundamental science to solve some of the world's biggest challenges.
Our multidisciplinary department houses expertise in science, engineering and mathematics fields, with an overarching drive to deliver real impact in the areas of sustainability and healthcare.
Our undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as our research programmes and Centre for Doctoral Training, develop fundamental understanding of molecular processes and systems, equipping students with the skills to tackle global issues, such as climate change, accessible medical care, and sustainable manufacturing.
Department of Computer Science and Technology
The Department of Computer Science and Technology (formerly known as the Computer Laboratory) is the academic department within the University of Cambridge that encompasses Computer Science, along with many aspects of Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. At present there are about 380 undergraduate students and 90 Master's students here. A further 160 postgraduates are engaged in research for the PhD.
We offer a world-class research facility combining theory with practical activities, and significantly advancing both the field and computing in the wider world. The Department sustains active research across the breadth of computer science and encourages the development of new technologies and applications.
Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership
We are an impact-led institute within the University of Cambridge that activates leadership globally to transform economies for people, nature and climate. Through our global network and hubs in Cambridge, Cape Town and Brussels, we work with leaders and innovators across business, finance and government to accelerate action for a sustainable future.
Trusted since 1988 for our rigour and pioneering commitment to learning and collaboration, we create safe spaces to challenge and support those with the power to act.
The Department of Engineering is one of the few truly integrated engineering departments in the world. It is also the largest department in the University of Cambridge. Its breadth and scale bring unique advantage. The research portfolio develops pinnacles of world-class excellence, which adapt and combine to address a vast array of engineering challenges. Graduate teaching brings students into the heart of the latest research and developments. The undergraduates gain a strong foundation in all engineering disciplines together with in-depth knowledge of their chosen specialist field. Across research, teaching and graduate study, the Department of Engineering offers all its staff, students and industry partners a highly networked community for sharing and developing engineering knowledge.
We’re in the business of transformation – individuals, organisations and society.
From our initial offering of one MPhil in 1991, we have expanded to a suite of masters programmes which are ranked in the global top 20, we have created inter-disciplinary research centres delivering ground-breaking research and innovation. Our outstanding Executive Education programmes for the world’s most prominent companies include a portfolio of over 25 Open Programmes and tailored Custom Programmes.
We continue to solve real-world problems that have a lasting impact on society. Now, more than ever, the world needs enlightened business leaders.
