Bone grafts are the second most transplanted tissue in the world with 1.5 million performed in the US annually. However there are issues with availability, donor site morbidity and potential disease transfer.
The primary objective of this work is to develop, evaluate and optimise a bioreactor for the culture of cells on bio-material scaffolds. Bioreactors are used to increase the mass transfer of nutrients to the cells within the scaffold as well as providing appropriate mechanical stimulation. Commercial options tend not be optimised for research and tend to be large and expensive. This project has allowed the development of small, cost effective bioreactors with high flexibility to develop understanding of the critical parameters for the stimulation of cells for proliferation and differentiation.
